Samson G-Track Review

– great mixer and interface

– good compatibility with both PCs and Macs

 – 19 mm diaphragm and PS01 pop filter

-Sonar LE leaves a bit to be desired

– might be a bit too small for some folks

The Samson G-Track is a portable USB mic that can recreate pristine recording conditions with ease, which is why Samson is so well known in this field. This mic is far more powerful than its diminutive size might indicate.

Samson G-Track Review

This comes equipped with its own mixer and interface.

Price:  $149.00

The Samson company has long been known for making quality microphones, but it can be argued that it was only diehard music recorders who have historically flocked to the Samson name. That all changed, however, with the advent of digital music recording. Now many of the greatest bands you've never heard make their music exclusively on their computer with microphones that plug into USB ports. It took a little while for the microphone companies to catch up to the rapidly advancing computer technology, but nowadays USB microphones work as well, or better than their traditional counterparts. Nowhere is this fact made more apparent than with the Samson G Track.

The Samson G Track mic marks the first time that a USB mic has come equipped with its own mixer and interface. In the past, you would have had to multitask between the mic and the controls for stereo or mono sound, vocals, monitoring, and much more. The G Track streamlines it all down, however, and gives you a multipurpose recording studio all contained within a powerful microphone. It also comes with a heavy duty stand, so that you can set up and record no matter where you are. The mic works with both PCs and Macs and it comes with its own studio software. Sonar LE, by Cakewalk, is the in-house workstation and it performs admirably, allowing smooth and effortless mixing with minimal fuss. It isn't the best program in the world, but since it comes free with the product we can't complain too much.

The 19 millimeter diaphragm and the PS01 pop filter both go a long way toward ensuring that the G Track boasts superior recording capability that is free of frequency problems. In addition, a powerful shockmount, known as the SP04, allows for a recording experience that is free of vibrations and other disturbing interference. Rare is the portable USB mic that can recreate pristine recording conditions with ease, but this is precisely the reason that Samson is so well known in this field. It appears as if they've scored another hit with this handy little gadget that is far more powerful than its diminutive size might indicate.
